St. Bridget's Special Education

Every Child Deserves a Way Back Into Learning

Individualized Learning and Special Education Support.

Some children do not need another classroom, another class repetition or another change of school. They need someone to determine what they can do, identify where learning stopped, and rebuild their education from that point—carefully, respectfully and systematically.

St. Bridget’s Schools provides individualized learning and special-education support for students whose needs may not be met adequately through ordinary classroom progression. Our approach combines the IDMANN Method, the Private Tutor Program (PTP), and carefully selected academic, digital, developmental and vocational activities to create a learning pathway around the individual student.

We do not begin with the class a child is "expected" to enter.

We begin with the child.

Assessment Before Placement

Chronological age, previous school placement and completed school years do not always reveal a student’s actual learning needs.

Before developing an intervention, we assess the student’s demonstrated capabilities across relevant areas. These may include literacy, numeracy, reasoning, communication, digital competence, practical skills, learning habits and social or emotional readiness.

The purpose is not to attach a label. It is to establish a credible starting point.

Where a student may require medical, psychological, sensory, behavioral or other specialist evaluation, the family may be asked to obtain an appropriate professional assessment. St. Bridget’s provides educational support; it does not substitute tutorial observation for clinical diagnosis or treatment.

An Individualized Education Plan

Following assessment, the school develops an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for each admitted student.

The plan identifies:

• The student’s present capabilities;

• Immediate learning priorities;

• Appropriate instructional materials and activities;

• Short- and medium-term tutorial targets;

• The personnel responsible for instruction and support;

• Methods of assessing progress; and

• A schedule for review and revision.

The plan is a working document. It changes as the student develops, new needs become visible and defined competencies are achieved.

Dedicated Tutorial Support

Where appropriate, a student may be enrolled through the IDMANN Private Tutor Program (PTP).

PTP provides concentrated tutorial attention organized around one student’s learning requirements. A primary Tutorial Coordinator works with the student consistently, while additional instructors or specialists may support particular subjects or activities when needed. This one-on-one arrangement offered by PTP is the key to creating a safe learning environment for the student.

This is not ordinary private tutoring added to an unchanged school program. It is an individualized educational intervention in which instructional sequence, pace, materials, practice and assessment are coordinated around a defined Tutorial Target.

Learning Through More Than One Pathway

Academic difficulty does not mean that a child lacks ability.

Some students reveal competence more readily through visual work, computers, practical activity, fabrication, music, movement or structured problem-solving than through conventional written lessons. These activities can provide additional routes into language, mathematics, concentration, planning, persistence and confidence. Our job is to find the right fit for YOUR child.

St. Bridget’s draws upon our extensive digital, creative and vocational resources as part of the wider intervention. The purpose is neither diversion nor premature job training. It is to help the student discover capability, produce successful work and rebuild a confident, constructive relationship with learning.

Dignity at Every Stage

For instance, a teenager working on foundational literacy or numeracy should not be treated as a much younger child.

Instruction may return to an earlier competency level, but materials, conversation, responsibilities and expectations should remain respectful of the student’s age and dignity. Progress is measured against demonstrated capability—not embarrassment, comparison or arbitrary promotion.

We do not promise that years of missed learning will disappear (overnight) according to a predetermined timetable. We promise to establish an honest starting point, provide structured support, monitor progress and advance the student when the evidence shows that the relevant capability has been developed.

Family Partnership

Successful intervention requires sustained cooperation between the school and the student’s family.

Families receive confidential progress reports and participate in scheduled reviews. They are expected to provide relevant educational and health information, maintain consistent contact, support agreed interventions and avoid placing the student under counterproductive pressure.

Where parents live outside Nigeria, clear arrangements must be established for communication, consent, emergency decisions and an authorized local guardian. We are well versed in supporting families that live abroad. But it requires clear and consistent communication. And we have the means - and organizational culture - needed to accomplish that seamless interaction with parents that are not local, or live abroad. We can help your child to succeed.

Residential Support

Residential participation is available for students whose circumstances require a stable, closely coordinated learning environment. Our boarding facilities provide outstanding support to school-age children that are capable of living away from home. With more than 30 years of experience running a full-boarding facility, our school provides adequately and comfortably for school-age children capable of living away from homw (or about to do so). Our boarding facilities provide structured support for school-age children who can live away from home with appropriate supervision, family contact and residential support facilities.

Residential placement is not automatic. It is part of the overall assessment of the student’s educational needs, welfare, and development. Accommodation, supervision, safeguarding, health requirements, family communication and related facets of residence life are defined well before placement.

A History of Special-Education Engagement

St. Bridget’s has a longstanding connection with - and commitment to - special education. The school was previously recognized as a Center of Excellence for Special Education and received support through a 2011 UBE Special Education Intervention Project. Special education is not an appendage at St. Bridget’s. The principles that make individualized intervention possible are built into how the school teaches.

With our ongoing improvements and evolving partnerships, that history is being renewed through a more precise operating model: individualized assessment, defined tutorial targets, coordinated instructional support and evidence-based progression.

St. Bridget’s remains an inclusive school serving a broad community of learners. Our instructional architecture is deliberately designed to include the individualization, flexibility and coordinated support required in special education.

Who May Benefit?

Individualized intervention may be appropriate for students who:

• Have substantial gaps in foundational learning;

• Have repeated classes without sustained improvement;

• Have experienced interrupted or inconsistent schooling;

• Learn differently or require substantially more individual attention;

• Face social or emotional barriers that interfere with learning;

• Need a carefully paced return to structured education;

• Have particular strengths that are poorly served by ordinary group instruction; or

• Require an educational program developed around demonstrated capability rather than nominal class placement.

Not every student can be served appropriately by the same environment. Admission depends upon assessment, program fit, safeguarding considerations, and above all, the best interest of the child.

Begin With a Confidential Conversation

Families do not need to arrive with a complete diagnosis or proposed curriculum. We are here to help.

Tell us about the student, the educational history and the concerns that have brought you here. We will explain the assessment process, determine whether St. Bridget’s may be an appropriate environment and identify the next responsible step.

We do not ask your child to fit the program. We build the program around your child.
